The Cost of Cloth Diapers- A Comparison

The cost of cloth diapers is an important aspect of choosing which kinds to buy for your baby. This means taking into account the kind of cloth diapers as well as the brand of diapers. Some kinds of diapers are less absorbent and therefore need to be changed more frequently. Also, leak protection will have to be accounted for when looking at the cost of cloth diapers.

The cost of cloth diapers can vary greatly depending on the type and brand of diaper you choose. Some brands such as BumGenius and Econobum offer one size diapers. These diapers will fit babies from newborn up to potty training. If choosing one of these diapers you will have to take into account the extra stuff needed for them to work. Take for instance the Econobum cloth diapers. These diapers are prefolds so you will also need some covers to go along with them. The BumGenius diapers are pocket diapers which are all one piece; you just need to insert the absorption pads into the pocket. So let’s estimate the cost of cloth diapers alone. We will buy twenty-four cloth diapers and six of the diaper covers from Econobum. Now Econobum has a kit that you can buy that has three covers and twelve of the diapers. This kit costs about $49, we’ll need two making it cost $98. The BumGenius one sized diaper is one piece so we won’t need covers. However, we will have to buy them separately. Each one cost about $17. So we will need twenty-four diapers at $17 each, coming to a total of $408.

Now for the sized diapers. Sized diapers come in four sizes; newborn, small, medium and large. However, most babies are big enough for a small at birth and most won’t reach the large size before going on to potty training. There are exceptions but this is the general truth. Taking that into consideration we will need to calculate the price of sized diapers. We chose the Thirsties fitted cloth diaper for this one. One diaper is $14.50. We will need about twenty-four of both the small size and the medium size. So forty-eight diapers at $14.50 each will come to $696. We will need to get some covers as well. So buying twelve covers at the suggested price from the company which is $11.50 each. That will make $276 to be added bringing us to a total of $972.

As you can see the prices greatly differ when taking into account brands and types of diapers. However, the price will differ even more if you choose to buy covers with prints or look at sites such as Amazon, eBay or even Craigslist for better deals. Also, look at the chosen company’s website as they will sometimes run contests for free diapers, have discounts and coupons for even more chances to save on the cost of cloth diapers.
