Changing cloth diapers

How to change your baby’s cloth diaper

Many people want to use a cheaper, more environmentally friendly method of diapering their baby. Cloth diapers are gaining popularity with modern parents especially in today’s economy. They are cheaper in the long run, saving hundreds of dollars. Unfortunately, there is one small thing that keeps most parents from going to cloth. That thing is the act of changing cloth diapers.

So just how does one go about changing cloth diapers? The newer cloth diapers which are coming out today are easier to use and some of them require only one real step. If you have and all-in-one or all-in-two diaper the method of changing the diaper is the same as with disposable diapers. However, if you have the all-in-two diaper, be sure that you have the inner attachment in place or have folded a prefold diaper into the center. For changing cloth diapers of any other variety follow the steps below.

Step 1 Collect all the supplies needed. You will need to have: a folded cloth diaper, a fresh diaper cover (if the one that is one needs to be changed), baby wipes, powder and diaper cream. If the diaper cover happens to be an older version or one that does not have velcro or snaps on the side you will need to have either diaper pins or Snappis. Ly them next to where you will be changing cloth diapers.

Step 2 Lay the baby on the changing table or bed.  Always keep your hand on the baby to ensure he doesn’t fall off of the table.  Unfasten the baby’s bottoms to gain access to the diaper.

Step 3 The next step in changing cloth diapers is gently unfasten the soiled or wet diaper. Remove the diaper and gently clean the child’s diaper area wiping from front to back. Place the soiled diaper into the diaper pail, keeping your hand on the baby at all times.

Step 4 This is where changing cloth diapers can be a bit tricky, especially if you have an older baby that likes to move around a lot. Place the fresh diaper into the diaper cover. Gently place it under the baby, raising their hips slightly above the table. Go ahead and put some powder and cream on the baby’s butt area if needed. Fold the front of the diaper over the front of the baby’s diaper area. Carefully fasten the sides of the diaper using the velcros, fasteners or pins.

You should always be careful when using pins to fasten the sides of the diaper. Changing cloth diapers is easy once you get used to them. Just remember, if you have a little boy, be sure to cover his front before he decides to give you a good soaking!
