The Basic Facts Of Cloth Diaper Packages
Everyone has their own set of reasons for cloth diapering their children, including but not limited to – environmental conservation, cutting back on chemical exposure, vanity and increasingly ever-popular saving money! Over the life of a child, cloth diapering can save thousands upon thousands of dollars, and as many of us can attest to, every penny counts. As a seasoned cloth diapering parent will tell you, there are so many routes one can go when building a cloth diaper stash for either a new baby or as a switchover from disposables. I am going to talk about the most frugal ways that families can cloth diaper on a bare bones budget.
For around $70 you can have 3 dozen infant size unbleached Indian cotton prefolds which is right around the amount that one would need to successfully diaper a newborn, washing a load of diapers twice a week (give or take of course – as a child gets older the number of diaper you need decreases as a general rule).
Paired with the prefold, one will need some type of cover ranging from wool, to plastic or vinyl – the least expensive being the old fashion pull-on rubber pants that many of our own mothers used diapering us and our siblings! I recommend having a minimum of 4 covers, depending on your washing preference. Covers can be hung to dry and hand washed in between loads of laundry. Of course the more covers you have, the less you wash – many people like having 6-8 covers allowing them to be washed right in with the prefolds every time.
A small water resistant bag for outings (or you can use a grocery bag, but these are so cute!)
I would use the doublers for night diapering or if I was taking a longer car ride and hoped the baby would sleep the whole way without wetting through the clothes onto the car seat cover
At many diapering shops off and online you will typically find ready-made packages that include everything one would need to start cloth diapering a child. These are often very handy for parents that are new to using cloth diapers and can take the guess work out of choosing cloth diapers. Either way that you go, using cloth rather than disposable diapers is a great choice for lots of types of families and should be tried by anyone with even the slightest interest. Cloth diapers are great for your home, family, environment AND your pocket book!
Cloth Diapers Have Changed
A package of diapers seems like a small thing – and not so much money for a dry and happy baby, right? Did you know that the average baby will use over 6,000 disposable diapers before potty training? And that those diapers will cost about $2,000? Suddenly those diapers are not so cute.
You’ll find that using modern cloth diapers is more convenient than ever. Just shake any solids into the toilet and store the diapers in a dry pail until wash day. Then toss them in the washing machine – if you use a pail liner you won’t even have to touch them or wash the pail. Run a cold rinse with no detergent, then a hot wash with low-residue detergent that contains no additives, enzymes or fabric softeners. Air dry on a line or clothes rack, or tumble dry. Now you have soft, clean, fresh-smelling diapers for your baby. See? Easy as can be.
Old-fashioned rubber pants and pins are out – snaps and velcro-style closures are in. Now you can find a wide array of possibilities from all in one styles that are as easy to use as disposables to vastly improved waterproof covers and super-absorbent prefolds. No matter what style you choose, you’ll love how cute they look on your baby and how much money they save your family. There are hundreds of cloth diaper makers. From moms who sew cute cloth diapers from home to large internationally known brands, there are cloth diapers in every imaginable color, print and style. Just use a simple waterproof wet bag to hold used diapers until you can take them home for washing.
How to Choose Cloth Diapers Package
Used cloth diapers are mounting a significant come back lately and there is a justifiable reason. Simply for kicks, get out there and check the price of a package of throw away baby diapers. Divide the price of the pack of diapers by how many diapers inside the package. This provides you with the expense of a single baby diaper. At this point, multiply that price times 5,000 and you will have a concept of just how much you are going to invest in baby diapers, in between having your baby and potty training, if you are using disposable baby diapers. Needless to say cloth diapers tend to be messier. I remember the days involving baby diaper pails…along with the accompanying aromas. You will find varieties having fiber packed strips, three-way layers and in many cases velcro rather than the previous diaper pins.
Infants making use of these types of diapers have a tendency to suffer a lesser amount of diaper rash and so they often become potty trained at an younger age. Used cloth diapers may provide you a level of savings unimaginable with other types of diapers.
