How to change your baby’s cloth diaper
Many people want to use a cheaper, more environmentally friendly method of diapering their baby. Cloth diapers are gaining popularity with modern parents especially in today’s economy. They are cheaper in the long run, saving hundreds of dollars. Unfortunately, there is one small thing that keeps most parents from going to cloth. That thing is the act of changing cloth diapers.
So just how does one go about changing cloth diapers? The newer cloth diapers which are coming out today are easier to use and some of them require only one real step. If you have and all-in-one or all-in-two diaper the method of changing the diaper is the same as with disposable diapers. However, if you have the all-in-two diaper, be sure that you have the inner attachment in place or have folded a prefold diaper into the center. For changing cloth diapers of any other variety follow the steps below.
Step 1 Collect all the supplies needed. You will need to have: a folded cloth diaper, a fresh diaper cover (if the one that is one needs to be changed), baby wipes, powder and diaper cream. If the diaper cover happens to be an older version or one that does not have velcro or snaps on the side you will need to have either diaper pins or Snappis. Ly them next to where you will be changing cloth diapers.
Step 2 Lay the baby on the changing table or bed. Always keep your hand on the baby to ensure he doesn’t fall off of the table. Unfasten the baby’s bottoms to gain access to the diaper.
Step 3 The next step in changing cloth diapers is gently unfasten the soiled or wet diaper. Remove the diaper and gently clean the child’s diaper area wiping from front to back. Place the soiled diaper into the diaper pail, keeping your hand on the baby at all times.
Step 4 This is where changing cloth diapers can be a bit tricky, especially if you have an older baby that likes to move around a lot. Place the fresh diaper into the diaper cover. Gently place it under the baby, raising their hips slightly above the table. Go ahead and put some powder and cream on the baby’s butt area if needed. Fold the front of the diaper over the front of the baby’s diaper area. Carefully fasten the sides of the diaper using the velcros, fasteners or pins.
You should always be careful when using pins to fasten the sides of the diaper. Changing cloth diapers is easy once you get used to them. Just remember, if you have a little boy, be sure to cover his front before he decides to give you a good soaking!

Disposable Cloth Diapers- The Hybrid Diaper
Everyone seems to be hearing about the new hybrid cloth diapers with their cloth diaper persona and their disposable inserts and liners. But many believe that the only choices in liners are what the companies make. Well that is a false pretense as there are several disposable cloth diaper liners available for use in both hybrids and in regular cloth diapers. Disposable cloth diaper liners are available in most stores that sell diapers and cloth diapers. These stores include Walmart, Target stores, many grocery stores, CVS stores and other large retail chains.
So just what is disposable cloth diaper liners made for? As anyone with babies or small children know when poop gets onto cloth diapers or underwear it can be both messy and frustrating to get off before going to wash. So disposable cloth diaper liners were created to lie over the top of inserts or cloth diapers to make cleanup both easier and faster. When the liner is soiled, simply remove and throwaway or flush. Poop is disposed of quickly and there is little to no soiling of the diaper or insert meaning wet inserts and diapers can be tossed in the diaper pail or bag with little effort. Just remember to replace with a fresh liner for the next round.
There are several brands of disposable cloth diaper liners available. One of these brands is Kushies. These liners are biodegradable and can be flushed in the toilet for easy and mess free disposal. However, they should not be used in septic tanks. They will catch all solid waste but allow for the moisture to pass through to the diaper. Kushies are available in one hundred count perforated rolls and can be found on Amazon.com and various stores.
Bambino Mio Bio Liners by Bambino Mio are also available in various stores and can be used on both hybrid and cloth diapers. Like other liners, they are designed to allow moisture to pass through but catch solids. However, they have a one way design allowing moisture to pass through but they will not allow for seepage to pass back to baby’s skin. They are available in 160 count perforated rolls. Like the Kushies, they are flushable but should not be used with septic systems.
Bumkins also has a disposable cloth diaper liner which is very much cloth like but still 100% biodegradable and flushable. Made with Viscose, a material used to make rayon, these liners are soft and strong for easy removal of solid waste. They come in one hundred count packs which is estimated that most users will go through about four to six of them each month. As with other brands of liners it is not recommended to use these with septic systems. Also, if you have broken, old or easily clogged pipes you shouldn’t flush these liners as they can get clogged and cause some pretty nasty messes.
Many stores will have their own kind of disposable cloth diaper liners as well as many brand name liners. As with all things, you will need to search around your local area for the best deals and availability of diapers, inserts and liners. Be sure to check online as well. You never know what kind of deals and coupons may be lurking in cyberspace waiting to be plucked and used by tech savvy mommas and daddies.
